Training

We aim in training the mentally challenged adults by behavior modification through Occupational Therapy, Speech therapy, Yoga therapy and special education techniques by a team of efficient teachers and experts. We train them in Drama, Music, drawing and painting. We use yoga, music and Theater as therapeutic tools. Yoga and music reduce hyper activity and behavioral problems in our students, especially in Autistic persons. Theater therapy makes a group sense in them and it increases their communication skills, language skills and self-confidence.

Psychiatrists take classes for the parents about the management of their mentally challenged children.

We train our students in daily living skills, who are unable to do their daily chore, like eating, dressing, grooming, toileting etc. The main purpose of this training program is to infuse confidence in them, to make them feel that they are quite efficient and can attend to their daily needs, just as any normal human being. Moreover, this is an effort in mainstreaming them.

Vocational Training

At our Adult center at Karyattukara, as a part of vocational training we train them to make about 20 products like umbrellas, paper covers, paper carry bags, cloth Bags, writing chalk, agar bathi, phenoil, detergent powder, bathing soap, door mats, handicrafts in coconut shell, Screen printing, LED Bulbs, jute bags etc. Our students KANNAN and SURIL used to go to Day Care Centre of Govt. Mental health Centre to teach them how to make coir mats.

Extra Curricular Activities

We train our students in sports and games. We train them in Drama, painting and music too. We adopt theater as a therapeutic tool to increase self-confidence and communication skills in our students. May be for the first time in history (as per our knowledge, at least in Kerala), we staged Dramas “AMMAKILI”, “ORIDATHORU POONTHOTTAM”, “THATHA” , “SAMADOORAM”, ‘SWARNAKALASAM”, “CHAKKARAPAVA” , ”ITHORU RAJYAMANU” and “HAPPY PRINCE” in front of public audience (at Sahithya Academy hall, Regional Theater and Thrissur Town Hall.), enacted exclusively by Mentally Challenged persons. The play “HAPPY PRINCE” enacted by AMHA students was selected to play at Trivandrum, in the KRALEEYAM program of State Govt. 2023 – along with NORMAL CHILDREN. The theater group “RANGACHETHANA”, Thrissur and theater artist Sri.K.V.Ganesh supports us for this venture.

We conducted painting and drawing competition for the mentally challenged children of Thrissur district. We conducted an exhibition of drawings and paintings of our students at Sahithya Academy Hall, Thrissur and Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur respectively. AS FAR AS OUR KNOWLEDGE IS CONCERNED THIS IS A NOVEL ATTEMPT OF THIS KIND, AT LEAST IN KERALA.

We make and sell Greeting cards with the drawings and paintings of our students.

Students from various institutions, Human genetics students from colleges and MSW students, used to come to our institution as a part of their curriculum, project work and field study. Nursing students from Aswini college of Nursing, West fort Academy of Higher education and Govt. Nursing College visits and interacts with our students as part of their curriculum.

We celebrate Onam, Christmas and Independence Day with invited guests from various sectors of the society. Students from schools and colleges used to visit us during festive occasions. This will give our students an opportunity for social interaction with normal peer group. The interaction of the public with our students will help to remove the social stigma about the mentally challenged. This gradually helps in social mainstreaming of the mentally challenged persons.
